Objectives
Izraa Shagara (Plant a Tree) is an Egyptian non-profit organization (NGO Registration number: 10475, registration date: 27/3/2017) working on achieving sustainable environmental development, directed by Mr. Nabil Mahrous.
This pilot project aims to empower 10 women in training them to recycle organic waste to produce organic fertilizer (Vermicompost). These women will be pioneers in sustainable development and ambassadors for spreading the project goals.
Project Objectives:
-
Empowering women through raising awareness and practical training (workshop)
-
Enhancing the financial situation of the target group by providing a productive microcredit
-
Reducing the risks of accumulated organic waste in cities and rural areas
-
Producing approximately 100 kg of organic fertilizer (Vermicompost) during the duration of the pilot project

Project Overview
Training will be provided to 10 women who became sole providers for their families through widowhood, divorce or illness of family members. They are taught how to produce a high-quality product (Vermicompost) through recycling of their organic waste.
This product is obtained by feeding organic waste to an earthworm called "Red Wiggler" in a specific environment. This product will be a source for financial indepence and to better their situations.
Izraa Shagara will carry out the training at the Foundation’s farm. It was planted with this technique to show the trainees a practical example. The duration of two months of this pilot project corresponds to one cycle of feeding worms.
During the two months, theoretical and workshop sessions will be held for two day. Trainees will be provided with a small farm of earth worms, containing 1 kg of "Red Wiggler" worms through the microloan project. They will feed their own farm frequently until the end of the feeding cycle.
Vermicompost Production
The total expected output of each trainee after two months of feeding will be 15 kg of Vermicompost, with an input of 30 kg of organic waste. So, total expected output of all 10 trainees will be 120 to 150 kg Vermicompost.
The following table shows the output after the first cycle. Depending on the amount of organic waste there will be a fourfold increase of worms. The output of Vermicompost will be half of the total input of organic waste.
